Almost surely it is a problem with the modem drivers. I have had similar problems (but not nearly as bad) with a USB Network Card.
Uninstall the current modem drivers. Then, check with the manufacturer or WindowsUpdate for updated modem drivers.

ROFL... That's a good one. Uninstall the modem drivers and THEN check with Windows Update... <IMG SRC="smilies/biggrin.gif" border="0"> <IMG SRC="smilies/biggrin.gif" border="0"> <IMG SRC="smilies/biggrin.gif" border="0">

ANYWAY, I recommend that you quickly check with Windows Update before it blue screens on you, then uninstall the modem drivers, it will redetect and maybe install better ones.

Did you update the modem drivers? (LOL again Clam, stupid me, how can someone check WU if they have no modem) If you did and it doesn't work, well, normally I would recommend getting a REAL ISP like Road Runner or @home (High-Speed), but if you insist on keeping CompuServe, try reinstalling CompuServe 2000. It sounds like CompuServe could be the problem.
Oh well what do you expect on a Compaq running Windows ME and a variant of AOL? JK <IMG SRC="smilies/biggrin.gif" border="0">

hehe.. the modem driver I am using is the latest(I've checked w/ compaq last). The real problem must be compuserv. The bad thing is I have a contract with them or else... I guess I have to busy w/ them 'bout this problem
