Wont Restart or Shutdown Correctly!!!!!

Ok. Workin on a computer and whenever I go to shut it down or restart it hangs at a blackscreen with a blinkin DOS cursor. Anyone know why its doing this and how to fix it.

First of all, go here: www.docmemory.com (http://www.docmemory.com) and download the docmem memory testing utility.
Then check your memory. Is it ok? Any error messages?

whats running in the b/ground, norton?? virus checker?

what's the video card?

try doing alt-ctrl-del and shut everything down apart from explorer and systray. then if that works, laboriously do the same but leave one more item until you find the problem...

Make sure that the Bios has assigned an irq to the vga adapter. Double check all settings in bios. Run a defrag on the machine. Mr. Myagi is right also about checking the Norton Virus scan settings for checking the floppy drive at shutdown. Turn those off if you do have that installed on the machine. Sometimes reinstalled the sound drivers has helped in this situation as well.

also make sure "fast shutdown" isn't enabled in msconfig.

Try unplugging all USB devices and try again, this sometimes causes a big conflict with shutdown/restart/standby

The problem is definitely to do with Norton AntiVirus. Just disable floppy scanning in Options > Autoprotect > Advanced, and it should work. Don't use msconfig to stop Norton loading on startup, on two seperate computers I had a problem when Norton wasn't running (!), just keep it running but with floppy scanning disabled.

If the computer uses a SoundBlaster Live! soundcard do the following (It worked for me!):
1.Right click on the My Computer icon.
2.Go down to properties.
3.Click on the Device Manager tab.
4.Look for Creative Miscellaneous Devices and click the + sign next to it.
5. Click on Creative SB16 Emulation tab then hit the Properites button on the bottom.
6. Click on the Settings tab.
7. Check the Box "Allow LPT Interupt Sharing"
8. Kiss your problem goodbye!!

this solved my problem till i got a USB DSL modem now i get the shutdown error again!!!! unplug the DSL modem shuts down fine

this is a known problem with some configurations - on shutdown the computer tries to shutdown any USB devices that support this feature..


it usually hangs..

1. make sure ACPI and power management in your BIOS are set to Disabled

2. Unless you have USB Keyboard and mose set USB legacy to disabled.

3. take a look at M$ document :

4. Make sure you have The Latest BIOS
