I know if you go to Norton's site and download the virus def, you should be able to keep them updated. You can no longer get program updates, but you can still keep your definitions up-to-date. So, if you prefer Norton, you may be able to keep it and save the $$$ on Innoculate it.

InnoculateIT personal addition is a free download, you must register with them but there isn't a time limit on auto updates. I have used InnoculateIT personal for 8 months now and I love it. It is small and doesn't try to take over your computer. I have also used Norton, I just like InnouclateIT better.

Same here. You can set it up to autodownload updates at startup, or you can manually do it yourself.

I've used Inoculate IT PE for about 1 1/2 yrs. with no problems , its a great program .Used Norton 2000 ( with some problems ) for a while and tried McAfee prior to that and didn't like it at all.I don't believe I ever had a virus get by Norton , but it seemed to require more resources and also seemed to conflict w/ some applications.

Hee at the shop we only use 2 AV programs. F-Prot which is not free and innoculate which is Free. Another one that is getting better is Sophos but it is not free. As far as removing Norton!!!! I always get nervous when ever I have to remove any Norton Progarm. Be careful when it tries to remove old files no longer needed. Norton is not too smart about what is needed.

InoculateIT 4.0 - Corporate version is even better that the Personal Edition. Very small not much memory usage and is excellent for server and e-mail protection.

If you are going to spend money on AV - InoculateIT is a great product.

Not sure why InoculateIT is free maybe to get a good client base and then start charging, just like McAfee did.

Yes, just got the e-mail, the InoculateIT program ends on the 7th, and becomes e Trust EZ Antivirus, a chargeable product with a special entry price for current users. We'll be able to continue to get signature file updates for InoculateIT.

CA has removed the Inoculate PE program from their web site. Does anyone here have a copy of it? I have been using it for about 1 1/2 years now but I have lost the install for it.

Yes you can just unisatll the Norton Anti Virus. What you may have to do is Uninstall the whole thing and then reinstall it choosing the custom setup option and select and deselect what you want. Check in start/program/norton and see if it has it's own seperate uninstall, as someone before stated be careful when it asks you about shared files. Tell it to leave them on the system otherwise it could cause problems with the other norton stuff you leave behind.

Nothing Beats Mcafee Antivirus...
How much time would it take for you to understand that Norton Su@#s!!!
It can't defend you from half the Viruses that Mcafee does.

I like Norton A.V. or Innoculate AV.
I downloaded the last freeware version Of Inn. A.V. just at the beginning of this month. Talk about perfect timing.
I like Norton A.V. for their rescue disk features. That way, I can use a set of rescue disks in dos mode and let a non-booting system scan overnight to fix or report a virus. This feature helps us real well. But if timing is an important factor, then we attach up a small 4.3 gig tester hd loaded with Windows 98 se set up with either NAV or INNOC for a faster scan on the customer's system.
I'm staying away from Mc cough cough cough fee.

Mcafee is ok, but not much better than Norton; I agree with the gentlemen that spoke earlier about F-Prot. It catches viruses quite easily, but isn't free. I dont' trust the free programs myself, but I don't know about Inoculate-IT I never tried it. I forget the virus we stacked against Mcafee, NOrton and F-Prot. Norton missed it, mcafee saw it but couldn't clean it, F-Prot ate it for lunch Too bad their updates ain't free.. then again, neither is NOrton

If you're using NAV 5.0, throw it in the garbage! It's virus scanning engines were made more than 3 years ago, and there hasn't been a good program update for it in years.

All you people talking about "my virus program didn't catch it lalalala" should make sure that your program is up-to-date, and not OUT OF DATE, like NAV5.0. If your AV program is fairly recent (lifespan of AV program versions is usually about 2 years), and you keep it up to date, you won't be getting the virus in the first place.

Also..if your AV protection didnt prevent the virus infection, what makes people think that it will detect the virus after-the-fact? Something to ponder...

I wouldn't let a Norton product in the house. Frankly, I think I'd rather have the virus. At least you canget rid of a virus.

When the love bug hit verizon last year,it took norton 12 hours for a solution. It took Mcafee three days...

A. This is a discussion about removing Norton and installing something else. This is not a thread about which is better.

B. Alley, this won't be much help, but I know there was a thread before that gave a way to remove the update expiration for Norton. This way you could still download the updates from www.symantec.com (http://www.symantec.com) and install them manually. Maybe someone with a better connection (and more time than I have) could find this??

Haaa. Good one Warp_core. I've been there and bought the t-shirt. Norton hangs on like grim death and causes even more problems after you try to uninstall it than it caused while it was running. I've been using and loving InoculateIT PE ever since McAafee bought out Dr. Solomon and messed it up. InoculateIT PE is thourough, unobtrusive and easy to configure and update. All around the best anti-virus program I have used.

Ok, I had a few minutes to search older topics...

Captain Packrat posted this message previously:

With older versions of NAV, you could edit the registry to extend your subscription. I think the latest (2001) has some sort of checking the insure that you haven't cheated and given yourself more time.
As a quick workaround, just reset your system date to a date when your subscription was valid and then run LiveUpdate. It'll let you grab the latest updates, and then you can reset your system date to normal, and NAV won't complain at all.

The newest version of InoculateIT is still available at this link:

This is one of my faves too. I hope they keep updating it.
