Strange prob

Ok have a strange problem happening to my .exe files which i cant seem to figure out. before it was only happening on the halflife exe causing crashing which was annoying but i just thought was simple corrupt file which i was too lazy to fix. now it has happened on another exe file with same error and im starting to wonder. ive run avg (updated) and innoculate (old) and both have found nothing. going to try and find a norton anti virus to check it also but wondering if this could be something other then a virus my crap cant find (which is what im thinking because dont really DL all that much stuff nor open emails). Could this be just something caused by comp overheating or only virus?

What is the exact error that you are getting?

It could be indicative of a number of problems, for instance bad sectors on your hard disk, bad or failing ram etc. As Deseqer says, we need the exact error message(s) to be able to answer your question.

If you have scanned with 2 virus checkers, it is unlikely it is viral, but still possible.

If you can get on the internet.... go to
<a href="http://www.housecall.antivirus.com" target="_blank">www.housecall.antivirus.com</a> and run a free
virus scan of your computer from that site. I've
done it a few times as last resort, when local
AV program doesn't seem effective

these are all good suggestions. the only thing I would add is to run SFC (system file checker) if its a 98 system. or File Signature Verification if its W2K. any files that are corrupt, you can extract from the cd rom.

Ok the error im getting is

HL has caused an error in <unknown>.
HL will now close.

If you continue to experience problems,
try restarting your computer.

The HL is of course halflife and which program im running the .exe file name goes there. Ive also check with Norton AV 2002 and nothing there im thinking something wrong with comp now.

This might be symptomatic of an overheating processor. If this is the only error message that you've been getting I'd say this probably isn't the case. If this is symptomatic of several different types of error messages you might want to check your sysem temperature.

If it is only Half-Life that is doing this, I would check on their website for patches.

I have recently had a similiar kind of problem with a friends PC, I found that the processor fan was disconnected and it was overheating. After 30 mins of using the computer it was crash witha similiar error message and then woudn't allow me to run anything until I rebooted!!!

I am not sure but to tell you the truth I have not ever had a problem with over heating. At one point i didnt even have a fan in my computer be sides the 1 one my cpu. I thought at one point it was over heating so I went to the manufacturers web site (www.amd.com) the web site said it could go up to 194 degrees before over heating. Mine was only 120. This is only just a guess but wouldn't it be pretty much impossible to get a computer that how?

120 degrees is fine... you didn't say whether it is only half life that crashes...
