i have a cable modem, hub, linksys router, and a lexmark optra r printer,i used hub to split internet, one to my tech system then the other to router, and the rest of my network.the printer is connected with an onboard nic to the router as well,my prob is that i cant get the tech system to print to the printer.its like it cant get into the router to printer.i tied to put the printer into the hub but then the network cant print,im fairly new to this type of networking, any suggestions?

Hmmm, your wording is a little confusing, if you're using all 10/100 stuff and your network is all on the same subnet, you shouldn't have a problem. The only thing I can think of is that sometimes the hub will have an uplink and either the first or the last port will share the uplink. I know the Linky routers are like this. Can you see the rest of your network from the tech system? If you can't move the uplink cable to one of the middle ports in the router or hub depending on how you have them connected. Sorry, if this isn't very clear either, I'm really hung-over.

I agree with kymera. Another thing though is that since your router has a firewall built in it might be blocking the incoming request to print. Is there a certain reason you don't just run the cable modem into the router and the router into the hub. It kinda sounds like your defeating the whole purpose of the router no? Just a thought.

actually the tech system is on another workgroup, thats why i got the lexmark network printer,i wanted to print from the other network via the linksys router maybe it is the firewall thing, that appears to be the problem to me, i want to get around this if possible.the tech is on a 10 base and the alternet network is 100 base in my residence.

If it is the firewall you could setup the printer in a DMZ (this might work). The printer uses an IP address correct? If so just set the router to allow all connections to that IP. It could work.

yes the printer has its own ip number, ive set dmz on every configuration i can think of just wont ping past the router,i even renamed the workgroups the same,no luck there either,i set the printer on the hub then the router side cant print

The problem may be with your hub then. Many 100mbit hubs will not "talk" well with 10mbit segments. It sounds to me like you have just added the tech segment. I would replace the 10mbit segment with some 10/100 stuff. It's so cheap now there is really no excuse, especially if it fixes you network.

yes i did recently add the tech side in order to share the internet with the store,i will try a different hub on the tech side,i just assumed that the network printer would be visable to either side through the router via ip numbers, any thought as to what i would need to get the printer to work through the hub?the router will only let dmz on one connection at a time.

Ordinarily you would be right, but if you're moving across from a 100mbit to a 10mbit network, you can have communication problems. It is best to get a 10/100 autosensing switch so that all links can talk regardless of speed.
