connect two comps with crossover cable, connect one computer to internet via modem, share internet connection with the other and have the other surf the internet across crossover cable and then out the modem on the other comp??????

Yes, it's called internet connection sharing or ICS. I have done it on a network with 3 computers and a hub. Same principles apply, check MS knowledge base for your particular OS for how it is done.

I've noticed crossover cables can be pretty slow from my experiences. Not sure why that is. I always prefer using a hub to anything else,... especially my netgear 10/100 hub. :)

Do yourself a favor and make sure you get a 10/100 autosensing switch. Those extra $10 can increase the efficiency of your network, because each computer gets a full 100mbit instead of sharing it like you would in a hub.
