I start a new job in Antwerp towards the end of the month, and they have just sent me a detailed description of my duties, one of which is to 'oversee the logistics and installation of a Backplane Firewall across the entire system infra-structure'. WHAT

I've worked with firewalls before, but Backplane Firewalls I've never come across.
Does anyone know what they are going on about?

I think it's an add-on card solution. I haven't worked with something like this before, but it's kind of like dropping in a modem into a computer. You throw this Firewall card into an existing box, and voila! Instant firewall function. I could be wrong, but I remember dealing with a 20+ modem card, that plugged into a Bay Networks backplane. Some one else can probably fill you in better than I.
