Windows 98 network access

I have a machine with a new install of Windows 98. The network card was already in the machine. The user does not have the software for the card (3COM Fast Etherlink XL 10/100Mb TX Ethernet NIC). The error message I am getting is "The network is not accessible...". I have put in the IP addresses, file sharing, protocols, client, and adapter. I have gone to the device manager and it says that the card is working properly. I am thinking I need to the software for the card and reinstall it?

Do you already have the drivers loaded for that card? Did you check for the link light? Do you see any flashing lights on the network card? Are the protocols bound to the right adapter, if you have say a dial-up adapter installed as well?

The machine was reformatted. The user does not have the software for the adapter. But he did copy the directories where the software was loaded. I know that is not going to work. THere is a link light on the hub. FLashing lights on the network card? I have to check that. The right protocols are bound to the right adapter (TCP/IP). Any other suggestions? I plan to make my network card ans software and install it in his machine later today to see if it works.

You could download the software from the 3com site, however 98 has a driver for that series card included in the library - can you ping? If you can ping, but not browse you need to enable netbios over tcp/ip - tcp/ip does not contain netbios naming functions or browsing functions.

Windows 98 should have loaded the windows drivers for this Card corrently, however i have noticed on 3Com cards sometimes if you have discovered the card during install of Windows 98, the card doesn't always go right.

try and remove the card in Device manager, and let Win98 find it and install it again.

ALso try and get the right driver (3com).

You have put in a default gateway and subnet???

If you have machines that are not on the same subnet ... they won't see you and visa versa.

And finally you may need to enable NetBios over TCPIP for machine name resolution. :)

The 3com 905b card has built in support in win98 and should work..


but I've had some problems with a few revisions..

1. Get this driver from 3com : ftp://ftp.3com.com/pub/nic/3c90x/3c90xx1.exe
and extract the files fo a folder (c:\3com)

2. remove all the Protocols and adapters from Network Properties.

3. remove the NIC from device manager

4. Reboot

5. when you are prompted for a driver select the driver from c:\3com..

6. reboot

7. configure your network and reboot...
