Hi,
I am responsible for making my school web page. They want me to connect to their network at the school but they nor I am too sure how to do it. Here is the situation...... The school is a LAN and it is connected to Houston..a much larger city than we are.
The school has 3 servers running the network. I wonder if and how I can connect to my schools network from my house nearby. I can get the IP and host name. Please help thanks..

Well, first off more info is needed to really get into any type of specifics. Info needed: Schools internet connection type?T1?T3?ISDN?DSL?Cable? Server operating system? WinNT?Win2k?Linux?Unix? is there anyone else that accessing the network from outside the network?
The "quick and dirty" way to do this is to just dial directly into a server/workstation in the network. Another way would be Citrix or Terminal Services which would let you connect to a server and run a GUI session from it. There is also the VPN option, Virtual Private Network connection which would be a secure connection through the internet to the network. I would recommend dial direct since it is easy and gets the job done, and its cheap too.

THe network is TI and is running off i think win98 but maybe 95 or NT (sorry I didnt tell you earlier) Only our school uses it and noone dials into it, but the school is networked too a bigger server in houston. How would I dial into it. Please give me detailed information on how to connect.

You should conenct a modem up to the server, and one of the schools phonelines (of which you need to know the number, ofcourse :D)
Then set up a dialup server on the server and when you dialup from home it should answer it and you should have access to the school network.
If you cant figure out how to do all this - i can be less general when i know exactly what the OS if for the server.

Hi...
I'm not sure what your config is...
The best solution is to find out who is the system administrator (can be a teacher or ourside company) that handles your systems.
then make sure how they connecto the other sites..
since you are only a small part of a larger network I think they might have an FTP server to upload the sites files to..
or maybe even a VPN server...
but I wouldn't recommend connecting anything to any server..
you need to make sure who is in charge and talk to them.

I agree with condor. Find out who is really running the show before someone gets into trouble. They will probably know best how to dial in and can give you the specifics.
Good luck!

I do webpage design for my ex-highschool ( http:\\www.pomonaband.org ) BUT before I graduated I did it from school so I could get some credit.. now I am sure you have an off hour, and if not you can do it as an 8th hour, or afterschool class and get some good credit. Plus you may have someone right there to help you out. That may be another option.
