Here's the deal:

I have MS BO Svr 4 and am runing MS Proxy 2 Sp1. When the client machines try to connect to the internet (IE 5) a user name/password box appears. I have the Proxy client (winsock)software installed on the clients, and have used numerous settings on the client browser (IE5), such as by IP address or computer name, but still the password box appears when trying to connect to the internet. Ironically, if I do NOT select to use a proxy server and uncheck "automatically detect settings", i can connect just fine. I've checked the MS Proxy console and verified that the permissions are correct and the services are all running. Enable access control is also checked, as I've created a local group named "web users" and have added those users to have permission to access the internet. What am I missing here? Any/All help greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance! :(

Somewhere in the MMC, you have a permission wrong. That's the only reason you should ever get a username and password box when a machine tries to access the net. Remember that the machine could be trying to make a winsock request, so you have to check permissions there as well as under the web proxy.

who knows what could be wrong...i would say uninstall...format..and then restart all over...

No but serioulsy, check the permissions somehere. The same thing happened to me and somehow the winsock started messing with my winmodem. I just reloaded the drivers and it was fixed.

I don't know why this would be the best solution to a permission error. If everyone is authorized for internet access, then in your properties for Proxy Server, make it so everyone is granted permissions. Otherwise the Web Users Idea is the easiest for admin purposes.

Ditto Q That's exactly right!

Goodespeler if you don't know the answer, or have network experance with proxy servers don't just guess! That is no help at all for the person's problem.
