sharing internet con. with cable modem

Does anyone know if this will work. A friend wants me to set up his 2 computers to share a cable modem. He says the guy at the store sold him 2 nic cards and a hub along with a butload of cat 5. Can he share his connection by having the cable modem going into the hub and then hooking the two computers to the hub. It has been a while since I have had to set up a network and I know nothing about cable modems. Any help would be appreciated. He is doing about 2000.00 worth of electrical work in my house for me and I got his computers working again after the local shop told him he needed two new computers. So we are going to call it even after I get his network problem taken care of and all it cost me was time so far. Thanks in advance for your help.

Yes, sharing the connection should be no problem. If he only has two computers, you really don't need a hub at all. You can just use ICS, if these computers are using Win98 or later. But anyway, here the link to check out which will show you how to do it whichever way you deccide to go.

I am a router man. goto www.buy.com (http://www.buy.com) and search for part # befsr41 it is there 4 port cable dsl router.... plug the modem into the router and the cat 5 cables from the computers to the router.... set up the machines to use DHCP for the ip address and you will be set.... install net buei and share the drives and you will have a nice little network going.

the router also acts as a firewall... plus he can plug 2 more computers in to it in the future if he ever wants to ... ans it is scalable up to 253 computers with hubs and switches of the sort..... good luck
oh also I just ordered one the other day from buy.com and got a 15 dollar rebate off of the alresdy low 99 dollar price!!!!!

Don't use money on a router when u have a hub. The easiest way to share your connection is by using WinProxy. Connect the cable modem and the client machines to the hub and use the simple instructions from the readme file in winproxy.

I would suggest also a hardware router. You can get a single port router to use with the hub, around 75.00 or so. There is so much that can go wrong with a software solution.......I have a d-link 4 port router, and I have 4 desktops and 1 laptop networked to it with a 4 port hub in the mix. I can also plug in two more computers into the hub. I have had all five machines going thru a cable modem at the same time; no problems <IMG SRC="smilies/biggrin.gif" border="0">
