I have recently tried to put together a VPN server on my one Win2k server. I am on cable internet with a Linksys 4-port router. I have port 1723 forwarded to the right IP and have the server's ip on DMZ. When I try to connect to the VPN, it connects, then goes to authorize my username and passwd. It sits for a while then gives me error 721, stating the VPN is not responding. Any clues why this is happening? I have been trying to get this to work for over a week now. Thanks...

Make sure you are allowing PPTP passthrough on the router to, do that by going to the settings or advanced tab and it is on the first page it brings depending on the firmware version you have. Make sure your client is using PPTP for their VPN connection. Check the client connection and make sure you have encrypted password and encrypted data checked. What is the client OS by the way? if 9x you may need to set the MTU size down to medium.

The Os'es are Windows 2000, and Windows XP. I have the PPTP enabled on the router and also on the clients. Still won't get past the authenication.

I have the same problem. Everything I have tried has not worked. The only thing I have not tried is reseting the router to default settings and re-applying all the settings. You do this by holding the reset button down for 30-seconds. I have an SMC router on order just in case.

Ah Ha! I have just figured out the problem. If you are on the LAN and you use the router to go out and use the external IP address coming back in, it won't do it try it from a computer that is not on the internal network and it should work fine. I ordered an SMC7004ABR and the same thing happened...well a little different error message but the same idea. Now I have a SMC7004ABR sitting around because I thought the LinkSys didn't work right and now I have to explain this to my boss...great sounds like fun. Atleast we have a route on stock now...he he he oh well.

I am using VPN and it is connected like this:
Client > SMC 7004ABR > Internet > SMC7004abr > server
It works fine and the Server is not in DMZ. ONLY port 1723 is forwarded and only on the server. Outgoing connections do not require port forwarding as the router figures it out by the internal network's request for port 1723. Return packets destined for trusted machines are always allowed unless specificly blocked in the router. I have no special configuration on the client side router at all except a separate machine not included in the vpn is in the DMZ (only so zonealarm will have something to do :) ).
