Hello all,
I have recently set up a linksys wireless access point + router connected to my cable modem. All the hardware is set up correctly and my settings for the router are also correct. I have 2 WinME machines connecting and one WinXP machine connecting. One of my problems is that my winxp machine constantly gets kicked off the network. Maybe a DHCP problem? I have assigned it a static ip so that shouldn't be it . Sometimes the xp machine will take all the machines down with it, but usually it is only the xp machine that gets kicked. I can't figure out the problem. Any suggestions? PS: I am using the xp provided drivers for the wireless card.

OK, if you assign it a static IP - it's not going to use the DHCP server built into the router. You need to set the network settings to use DHCP and have specify an IP address as your choice under network settings. The whole point of DHCP is to lease an IP address for you so putting in a static IP defeats the point of using DHCP - thus your machine is unable to connect to the router.

The way this works is all machines hook to the router via the DHCP server which will lease them all IP addresses and make sure they are on the correct/same subnet. Just enable tcp/ip as the only protocol and have use DHCP set on all and do not put static IP's on any.

Also - the router will probably give the exact same IP to each of the machines from now until you throw it away or reset it. At least that's what mine does.

Hi,
I originally had all the machines set to use DHCP but I tried static one them to see if DHCP was the problem. The XP machine still disconnected on both DHCP and static ip addy's. I will try re-enabling DHCP on the machine and see if it does anything. I'll get back to you soon.
