This is the problem: Can I connect two 10/100 ethernet adapters without passing through an HUB? How should I make the cable? Simply inverting all the wires in one plug?

If your going from NIC to NIC without a hub, then you would need a crossover cable.
Here's a link, to show how to make one.

One note make sure when you build this cable shown on the provided link to make a 568b type cable. The "t568a" is a standard that is not used anymore other than in the military any cables you use any more will all be a t568b that way if later you need to use this cable to link two old hubs togetherthat dont have uplink switchs you wont have to make another cable.
