win 98 system, hp9100i cdrw and afreey 50x cd
both stopped working shortly after cable installed. Updated bios 11-14 (ASUS p5a).
computer works great with cd's not plugged in. if plugged in, the computer locks up
after booting up. ctl+alt+del shows
explorer not responding.

Either one of the drives has failed (remove one at a time from the data cable); the master/slave jumpers are set wrong (put the CDRW at master); the data cable is bad (try a different one). Let us know what you find.

hi the first thing to check is your ribbon connector for your cdr and cdrw, more then likely when they installed the nic for your cable modem they partly eased out the ribbon cable and it is not plugged in properly,
hope this helps clauded

i switched master/slave jumpers,
the cdrw is master and works great.
as you suggested the cd (slave) (afreey brand) is not reading cd's. i might buy new and see i thats the fix. would this also be the cause for an "osd error" at startup?

This is a bit off topic, but where exactly do you get this 'osd error'? The only thing I can think of for osd is On Screen Display!

Problem solved!!
new cd rom (Creative 52x)
Replaces (affrey 50x)
Next, new data ribbon for cd.
then windows 98. 2nd addition

finally massive deleting and junk cleanup
on all drives (Free INTERNET PROGS Etc.)

defrag and scandisk.

Just like brand New!!
