Looks like a bad drive but before calling Hp like see if anybody has had the same problem.

I'm running an older Pentium 233 MMX with 64 MB Ram on a Tyan S1571s Titan Turbo AT-2 mother board. Operating system Windows 98
4.10.1998. Two Hard drives on the Primary Ide port and Secondary has the HP Writer as master and Toshiba as slave.

I have tried all the tips from HP and still having problems with the drive reading mostly prestamped disks. Burning a disks works fine. What happens is the drive looks like it is having problems reading the drive and starts to behave erratic. The drive light blinks on and off locking up the system resources.. I have to reset the computer everytime. http://forums.windrivers.com/cgi-bin/forum/frown.gif

Thinking that there might be a driver conflick I booted into dos mode using a dos cdrom driver. Inserted the disk in the drive and had the same exact problem. Hp says the drive should not be cleaned so I'm left having to use my old Toshiba drive which reads the same disk just fine.

mostly sound like your laser eye is dirty.
You can ever bye a cd player cleaning disk or take your cd-r in an electronics shop where they will clean the eye for you.

I contacted HP and the tech agreed that the drive was bad and are sending me a replacement. So as long as it is still in warranty I best not mess with it.
