Can see LAN,but not WEB!

I have a Pentium II, with Win 98 connected to a Novell 5 LAN. When I boot up I can see my various directories in "My Computer" but can't connect to the web-message at bottom of browser state "server can't be located". I've checked my network settings(DNS, etc.), browser connections, checked the hub(switch)port, and switched patch cords from a "connected" computer. The other computer connects tothe web, but the original Pentium II cannot. I've checked the network hardware in the System, and it states the NIC is working(3Com). Should I try try reinstall the NIC driver? many thanks for any help!

Are you using a proxy? Check the proxy setting in your web browser. It seems like your NIC is working fine if you can see the Novell server. So it seems more like a configuration problem.

This is kind of a long shot, but right click on the network neighbor and go to properties (or go to Control Panel > Network ) and see if you have the TCP/IP protocol installed. The three main protocols used are:

(1) NetBUI. Used by MS Windows for sharing and other MS stuff.
(2) IPX - Older protocol used by DOS for networks. This was the original protocol everyone used to play DOOM, DOOM II, etc. on LAN's. Still used today for many first person shooters.
(3) TCP/IP - Used mainly for internet connections.

A computer can see another "shared" computer if they have the NetBUI protocol, but they won't see the internet if they don't have TCP/IP. The others may have the TCP/IP installed, so they can get to the internet just fine.

At the Network properties, you should see the TCP/IP protocol installed. If not, click "Add", then "Protocol", "Microsoft", then TCP/IP.
