I mistakenly posted this on the IDE Forum first.

I run windows 98 on my PC. I started out with a perfectly opperational CDROM drive, but when i installed my CD-RW i lost the use of my CDROM drive. Currently i have both CDRoms on the 2nd IDE Controlloer port. CD-RW on the far end slot and CDROM on the one below it. I have both connected to what i believe is the proper settings. CD-RW is on Master Jumper switch and CDROM is on slave setting.
At the Moment i have no D:(Default CDROM Drive) drive showing in My Computer and i have no idea what is going on.
WHen i look in the System properties in device manager, under Hard Disk Controllers it shows a Black "!" on a Yellow field (under secondary Ultra ATA controller) and it says that
"The Device is either not present, not working properly or does not have all the drivers installed. (Code 10)"
then says below that
"Try Upgrading the device drivers for this device"
I tried updating the driver for it but the CDROM and the CR-RW are still not present.
I first noticed the problem when i tried to install the CD-RW Software with the Origninal CDROM Drive.

I havent done much else other than what i have stated. If anyone could help me with this, I would Be Extremely Grateful.

Run Regedit and then search for a key with the name of NOIDE. Set teh value to it to 0 (zero) or delete teh key completely. Close Regedit then reboot. This solves this problem in 9 out of 10 cases. Also scan for any Boot Sector viruses & remove any reference to MSCDEX.EXE in your Autoexec.bat file.

Checked registry and no trace of the NOIDE.

I was talking to another Tech Support guy from the CD-RW company and he told me to put all of the settings as they were before i started to install the CD-RW.
I did that(that is to say, the original cable to the origninal CDROM set to Master in the secondary IDE controller port).
It still did not show up. he then advised me to Check the Bios Settings. that is when i posted in the Bios Forum.
I have the CD-RW set as Master and CDROM set as slave, they BOTH show up as that way in the BIOS settings.
I restarted with Normal BIOS Jumper settings. still no show on either Drive.

SHould i check for the NOIDE registry key again?
or another option....

I just bought a new IDE cable.
I Checked the Bios settings and both of the Drives show up in thier right places. I have the CDRW on SLave and CDROM on Master, CDROM is on end slot on the cable, CDRW is on middle slot.
Both in secondary IDE slot.

But Neither drives show up in Windows.
i have no CDROM ATM.

Anyone have any ideas on how to fix this?

It's been rather hard to follow this, posting in so many forums...

Will anything else work on the Secondary IDE channel? e.g. the hard drive. If not, the channel may have been damaged by a static discharge, or a connection may be faulty. Check the connector on the m/board for a pin bent over, or not sticking up as far as the rest (pressed through the board, breaking the track on the back.

If a hard drive works on the channel, try:

Make sure there isn't a DOS CD-ROM driver in CONFIG.SYS

In the BIOS setup, if the Secondary devices are set as CD-ROM, change them to None in case the BIOS CD-ROM support is clashing with Windows.

Re-check from a DOS boot floppy for a boot sector virus, then re-scan the Registry for NOIDE (if a B/S virus is active the NOIDE key can be reinstated).

See if the original CD-ROM is recognised. (I assume it is known to be still working?)

Checked the second IDE slot with my hardrive, it works fine there.

How can i check for a DOS CDROM Driver in the config.sys?

Ill try disabling the CDROMS in the BIOS settings next.

Still nothing when I disable the Drives in the BIOS settings. they were on auto before. now they are on CD-ROM setting.

How do i check for a boot secor virus?

and how do i check for a DOS CD-ROM Driver in the Config.sys?

What Anti-Virus software do you use? Whilst you can scan from Windows by making sure when the AV software is run, the option to scan Boot Sectors is enabled, a stealth b/s virus can possibly elude detection while it is active, so it's best to scan from DOS. There will be an option in the AV to make a recovery disk-set, which will let you boot to DOS from a floppy disk, and scan the system before a b/s virus has become active. But if you don't already have a DOS scanning facility set up like this, borrow one from someone reliable. If you make one on your system now, and it does have a b/s virus, you could just end up with an infected recovery disk-set, which is no help.

You can view and modify your CONFIG.SYS file by RUNning SYSEDIT from the Start menu, or use Notepad (not Wordpad) to open c:\config.sys

If there is a line similar to the one on my system:

DEVICE=VIDE-CDD.SYS /D:MSCD001

type rem at the start:

rem DEVICE=VIDE-CDD.SYS /D:MSCD001

This turns the line into a "remark" and it will then be ignored, but can always be put back later.

Here is the problem. Maybe.
Before I try searching for a Boot Sector anyway.

When I run Sysedit from the start menu it says that it cannot find either Autoexec.bat or the Config.sys window. Maybe these files, or atleast the config is in the wrong directory?

When you post something twice you can delete the extra copy by choosing edit/delete & ticking the box....

As for the question ... :rolleyes: ...

You don't really need either an autoexec.bat or config.sys to sucessfully load windows or cd drives 98 onwards does it itself. So for now use the syedit tool to avoid loading them (wherever they may be? "When I run Sysedit from the start menu it says that it cannot find either Autoexec.bat or the Config.sys window...". They seem to contain some instructions you don't need...

<hr /></blockquote>Darren & platy have now variously tested the theories that the controller & cable were either wrongly configured, duff or not detected properly by windows...

Are both ide channels enabled?, on properties of the main controller...

Test the drives are connected & working for sure by enabling boot from cd in bios and putting a 98 cd in the master. Boot to dos prompt(enable cd support) & make sure you can read the other drive...

Your problem is that you ARE loading a DOS CDROM driver. Your box is set by default to start with a DOS driver for the CD. Open your config.sys using Notepad, and edit the line in the Menu sextion from "menudefault=CD,30" to "menudefault=NOCD,30". Save the file and restart the computer. Your box will now start without loading a DOS CDROM driver and Windows will be able to load its own (faster) 32 bit driver. Device Manager should show the Secondary Ultra ATA controller without the exclamation mark and your CDROM and CDRW will be visible again.

Jeff i tried what you said and it came out the same as before when i restarted my PC.

And Freddy. I have three config.sys files on my PC.
The one that contained the information i posted was found in "C:\Windows\command\EBD"
second is in the main C:\ DIrectory, that one contains no information.

ANd the third is in the rescue disk file in my norton anti virus directory.
This one contains only one line "device=ifshlp.sys"

ANy ideas?

ANy ideas?<hr /></blockquote>ok forget the ebd one and the resque disk one ,,,,the file (or to be more accurate fileS are config and autoexec.bat ,,and they are in c:\ (possibly hidden files ) if u got them ok ,,,,if not ok ,,,,they are NOT needed UNLESS u need to load some OBSCURE device ,,,like a vintage s/card/scanner etc.

have only just spotted this thread and read it ,,,,i have not read the other threads ,,,so to clarify i will ask a couple of questions and hope u can answer.

was the ORIGIONAL h/drive cd-rom using the same ide cable or were they seperate?

dependent on that answer ,,,in the bios is the secondary channel enmabled ,,,,,i DONT mean drives set to auto/cd-rom etc ,,?

i think i read that u said that the cd-roms were being found by the bios?

are there any RED or yellow marks next to the controller in windows?

dependent on ver of win ,,in advanced settings are both prim and sec enabled.

start the machine in safe mode and check for any "rouge" ide controllers ,,,,,or indeed delete the enum key and let windoze refind everything

Do both drives actually work ? & are they cabled correctly?

Set Bios to boot from CD and use your 98 cd to enable boot with CD support, at least we'll know both drives actually work!

Considering all the confusion you have about what & where autoexec.bat and config.sys should have in them and even where they should be, I'd say re-run 98 setup over the top of your existing installation, it should leave all your currently installed progs alone and hopefully sort out your missing cd's.

ok I gave up on trying to get this CD-RW to work for now and i took it back to the shop where i bought it. I used the money to... entertain a higher calling. Coughskydivingcough.

Now i just need to get my CD-ROM working again.

its set up as master on the secondary IDE port. still no show in windows though.

Just confirm for me that the CD unit is correctly cabled/jumpered/detected at post by setting boot from CD in Bios and shoving your 98 boot CD in...

Yeah looks like the CD-Rom is set up fine and detected in Bios fine.
Nothing in Windows still.
