OK, I'm an idiot. I was reinstalling Win98 on my father's computer and FDISKed and FORMATed the hard drive. Normally I would FDISK and then run setup. That's always accomplished what I've needed, but for some reason I encountered problems w/this install so I FDISKed and FORMATed to fully clean the drive. However, in doing so, I wiped out the CDROM drivers. I've done this a couple of times at work, but I've been fortunate enough to have someone around that could bail me out. The BIOS can be set to boot from the CD, but I haven't been able to install the drivers for the CDROM so it isn't recognized. I don't know what I'm doing wrong. I've tried the setup routine on the CDROM's driver diskette that my father had and MSCDEX, but neither have worked. Any suggestions?!?

Get yourself a 98 boot disk and boot with cdrom support.

My bad, I didn't fully explain. I did have a 98 boot disk w/CDROM support, but none of the generic drivers worked. I tried plugging in the drivers I had, but I'm not sure if I had my syntax correct on the mscdex commands.

What kind of cdrom do you have?
Is it connected to the ide from the motherboard or does it connect to a sound card?

It's an IDE drive that plugs into the motherboard.
It worked fine the first time when I just fdisked and set up the logical drive...I just stuck in the CD and it booted and began setup. When I fdisked & formatted this is when the whole problem started. What, if anything should I be adding/deleting from Autoexec.bat &/or Config.sys to get this to work, b/c it's not automatically picking up the drive w/the generic drivers...even the specific ones after running the driver disk install program.
I'm a fledgeling tech and I figure if I can't even get past a simple problem like this, then I won't make it far...
I appreciate the help!

OK, You said you have a 98 boot disk.
If this is just an ide drive the boot disk should recognize the cdrom, using the oakcdrom.sys file.
MD CDROM on your c: drive and copy oakcdrom.sys to it
COPY EDIT.COM C:
COPY MSCDEX.EXE C:
EDIT CONFIG.SYS
type in C:\CDROM\OAKCDROM.SYS /D:IDECD000
EDIT AUTOEXEC.BAT
type in C:\MSCDEX.EXE /D:IDECD000
