[RESOLVED] Windows 98 Not Recognizing Kenwood 72x CD-ROM...

Hello everybody (please no, references to Dr. Nick http://forums.windrivers.com/cgi-bin/forum/smile.gif). Anyway, here's the problem. I just replaced my Mitsumi 24x CD-ROM drive with a Kenwood 72x True-X CD-ROM drive. Before I did, I removed the Mitsumi drive from Windows98 through System Manager. I then removed it and simply replaced it with the Kenwood drive. I checked and rechecked ALL the cables and started up the computer.

Now my BIOS detected it as something like a Kenwood UCR-421 drive (I don't remember specifically) so it seemed the cables were all good to go. But "good ol'" Windows98 decided not to and simply ignore it totally. Everything else was fine. My other Iomega ZipCD CDR/CDRW was fine as well and simply was assigned drive letter G:, my CDROM drive's letter. There was no conflict between either drive, since my Kenwood drive wasn't even there according to Windows98.

Now what is wrong??! I messed around with the DOS/Win 3.1.x drivers, but they didn't work. So I simply removed those, and was back to square one. What is wrong?? Please help...anyone!

ok first this is what i did .. i own a 72x kenwood ... set it as master and use a 80 pin cable even if its ata-33 (mobo)(i cant explain this but it will read cds / cdrs better) also go get the firmware updates on kenwoods site. I could never get my 72x to work right without the 80pin cable which was mastered to my hp 9100i cdr and since then it has been working alot better ... let me know how it goes .. good luck

There's a slight problem....I don't think I can set up the Kenwood CD-ROM drive as master. It is my primary slave connected to my primary master which is my 15 GB hard drive. My Iomega ZipCD CDR/CDRW is my secondary slave connected with my other 4 GB hard drive as my secondary master. The cables come to both hard drives and CD drives from the motherboard.

How would I set up my master/slave system if I did what you told me? Would I set up hard drives on the primary channel and my CD drives on secondary? Also, where could I get an 80-pin cable?

make both hd's on prim (one slave and one mast) and cdr on sec as slave and kenwood as sec mast ... avoid as much as possible putting cd with hd's (slows system down) thats prob part of your problem try that

and as for the 80 pin cable hmmm look around at any tech shop they should have one laying around to give you ... i would i have about 20 of them

Thanks a lot! I just had to put all my HDDs on primary and my CD-ROM/CDR/CDRW drives on secondary. And hey, it worked. I did not even 80-pin cables.

But one question...why doesn't Windows seem to have the CD-ROM support DMA? I got the firmware update, and that didn't help, although it did with Diablo II. Overall, the CD-ROM drive works great! Thanks.

the 80 pin cable helps with reading cds on the mother board .. something with the controlling of the noise on the 40 pin cables that occurs ... but ether way im glad it helped ..
