I've installed a cd-rw in my computer. It is a TEAC CD-W516EC that was originally in another IBM computer. When I installed it on my comptuer W2K picked it up as a regular CD-ROM, not as a CD-RW. I can't find any type of a driver for this device. I booted into my linux partition and it picked it up fine so I know that it works and is a cd-rw. The write speeds are 4x, 8x, 12x, and 16x. The re-write speeds are 4x and 10x. Here is the IBM webpage with info on the cd-rw. How can I get w2k to reconize this as a cd-rw?

what drive does it pick it up as?
does your burner software not detect the drive as a burner?

I couldn't find a CD-W516EC at their site, only a CD-W516EB
but anyway according to This it will only be seen as a cd-rom by Windows.

W2k picks it up as a TEAC CD-W516EC. I've opened the computer and looked directly at the drive, and the model on it is CD-W516E. I'm using Adaptec Easy CD Creator ver. 4.02c S31. This program originally came with an Acer CD-RW that I no longer have, and it doesn't reconize the cd-rw. I know there are updates to the program, but to download them you have to register with a serial number, which I can't seem to locate considering I got the software in 2000 and have since moved twice.

Well I just ran the web-update applet in the program, but it won't connect to the internet to perform the update for some reason. I don't think my companies firewall would block it because I've used updates in other programs just fine.

Try downloading and running Belarc (if you don't already have it)it may very well give you the S\N for Adaptec Easy CD Creator. Worth a try....

I found out where you can download updates on adaptec's site and that fixed it. Thanks Garak and Shamus for the help.
