ok. Hopefully this will not take too long ot get finished up.

FIrst of all i tried to install a CD-RW a while back and I couldnt Get it to work. despite all the great help i recieved here. I took the CD-RW back but now i cannot get my CD-Rom working again.

It worked fine before i tried to install the other one.
Right now it is set up the same as it was before i started. Master jumper, secondary IDE Slot. its on the end slot of the cable.
It is showing as installed in the Bios screen.
but when i go into Windows it doesnt show in the My computer window. and has a warning sign on the Secondary IDE controller in windows(same sign as the one on the topic).
I use windows 98 second edition.

Have you tried updating the drivers via Device Manager?

If its via, go to <a href="http://www.viaarena.com" target="_blank">www.viaarena.com</a> and get the latest 4 in 1's and install them, hopefully it will clear the problem.

I forgot to mention that I have a intel D850GB Pentium 4 motherboard in there.
So by the looks of it. the 4 in 1 thing doesnt apply.

okay, i believe what your looking for is the inf for the Intel 850 chipset. take a look at this link

this was a known problem with Windows 95. if the sceondary IDE channel had only a CD-rom on it the driver couldn't initialize properly.

1. try to use the intel inf utility (see the prvious reply) a.k.a Intel Piix bridge fix <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="wink.gif" />

2. go to your Bus Master IDE controller in device manager. It should have a setting saying "default" try to change it to "both IDE channels"

3. since you have the Intel 850 chipset you might try to install Intel's Ultra IDE drivers (known today as Intel Application Accelerator ...)

When i run that program it shows that there is nothing in the secondary controller. so i got nothing.

Go to device manager. look under Hard Disk Controllers and see if there is a yellow exclamation mark beside Secondary IDE Controller. If so, you should download and install that inf for the Intel 850 chipset link I provided for you in my previous post.

I did that before. now it shows no secondary IDE controller. There was a Yellow ! sign there beforehand. now there is nothing.

I mean I know your original post said bios could see the cdrom - have you been playing with the settings and the bios can no longer see it?

If it is and windows does not see it, you may have a hardware failure.
