Hi People,

I have a brand new Sony 48x CDROM drive. I also have a game called NFSSE (Need for Speed Second Edition). I have installed and played this game many, many times without a problem. Today I tried to install it and my computer frooze on me. I mean the mouse wouldn't work and after awhile the entire computer fro  ze.

I tried copying it onto my hard drive and installing it from there. The same thing happened. This doesn't happen in my other games. I tried cleaning it and it does the same things.

Is this the disk, CDROM or something else?

By the way. When I opened the disk by clicking explore rather than reading NFSSE, which is what I usually see when I open EXPLORE, I read NFSSEBBC. What does this mean?

If you've copied the complete contents of the CD to the HD, and it still won't install, then it sounds like a software issue. Hit CTRL-ALT-DEL to pop up task manager and end all tasks except SysTray and Explorer, then try installing again. Some games won't install from the HD anyway, they look for the data on a read-only device, this can be got around but is usually just to save you putting the CD in each time you play the game, and isn't really relevant here. Have you updated any drivers lately, such as video card or sound card to be specific?

Hi Orange,

I did what you said, copying it onto my HD and installing it from Safe Mode. However the same thing happened. I did update the video card lately, and did notice some problems with getting the video card to test properly with this game. I also upgraded to the most recent version of DirectX?

What do you suggest, going back to the previous versions?

Thanks,

Orangeman

Thanks Orange,

I uninstalled my current video drivers and reinstalled the 'new and updated' ones. Now the game works.

Thanks again,

Orangeman

PS. Nice Name!!!

Hi Orange,

Actually its a Pine 8mb PCI card. It got it to fit with my old, pre-AGP board. I took it down to a repair shop about a month ago and the repairman came right out and said it was a 'piece of sh*t.' As a result I've been updating alot recently. For example I transferred everything in my case to a new tower. I've updated the soundcard, the CDROM, the Mobo, the CPU, and even the printer. Now I'm going to have to update the video card as well.

See you later,
