I have a customers computer (Dell p200mmx) and I can get a cdrom to work in dos but not in windows. Windows recognises the change (picks it up in device manager) but wont let the user access it. I have 'pruned' the registry, tried disabling it and using dos drivers (including leaving it enabled) as well as moving it around from primary slave to secondary master. Any ideas?? Unfortunately, a reformat is not possible right now.

We've got a CDROM just like that. We use it for copying files in DOS. The CDROM is what you call ummm...stuffed.

HAd Dell Unit like that replaced CDRom with newer IDE UDMA CDROm and NO PROBLEM DUDE!
older Drives CDRom's are not Plug & Pray.
Newer ones are.

1. Look for errors on the hard disk controllers in the Device Mangler.
2. Rem out all Real Mode drivers in the autoexec.bat and config.sys
3. Do a registry search for NOIDE and remove if found.
4. Update your hard disk controller drivers.
5. slave the cd off the hard drive.
