This post was started by me but bryan_the_tech deserves the credit for it.

I KNOW that I.T. staff are normally the hardest workers around, and normally we don't complain about it either. Normally because we love what we do, and getting paid semi-resnable wages helps as well.
So how many hours a week do you guys put in?

I'm doing between 48 and 68 hours a week normally. Sometimes I work 6-12 days straight doing the above hours, I get paid around the 56k mark ($AU).
I'm the System Administrator of a 160 odd Network aware machines, plus a few other things....

Company regs say I have to put in 37.5 hours every week. I used to work well over 50 hours a week while we were short staffed, but now that we have more employees and little work, I haven't worked an hour of OT in months. My wife likes the fact I am home more, but I miss the extra few bucks on the paycheque... http://forums.windrivers.com/cgi-bin/forum1/noncgi/frown.gif

For you guys/gals working 40+ hours a week and you don't own the business. Be sure you are getting compensated for it at least in some way. Yes, you are learning a great deal and maybe you get to 'keep your own hours'. But eventually you will realize that those hours/dollars don't belong to you they are property of your family. And for you to just give them away is something you will live to regret. So be very watchful where compensation is concerned. Stay on top of the payrates for your job in your area. Keep records on paper away from the job. Don't hesitate to call the NLRB or a lawyer if neccessary. And don't be conned by that old "you're salaried so you don't get OT" line. You work, you get compensated. Thats the law.

I suppose it depends on how you define work. I only "work" ie get paid for doing things for others on average for 8 hours a week. However, my day starts at 7.30 am and stops a little after 10pm. What do I do? answers on a postcard please!

I have in the past kept up with the minutes that I worked OT and the minutes I left early. All in all the minutes just about balance out by my measure. Its when you get to the hours that things go to Hell. Especially when management just 'lets' you put in all the uncompensated OT you want. If they want you to work OT then negotiate a plan for it. Many managers don't realize that they may be putting their company at risk by 'letting' someone work uncompensated OT. Keep records, it protects everyone.

I try to keep it at 40hrs but most weekends I have to come in for a few hours.

I've finally got the network stable enough that I can go home most nights at 5pm. Was a time though that a sure way to tell what kind of a mood the IT guys were in was to see if they had on the same clothes as the day before.

It all depends on the workload. I worked 8a-10p Wednesday which is not unusual. I have been known to work till 2-3am if the projects demand it. There are some days that there just isnt any work, but they are few and far between. I guess in a week I could work anywhere from 30-80 hours, with the most common week having 50-60 hours.
