[RESOLVED] CD ROM / IDE

hi there
i'm stumped with my CD rom drive...
my bios sees it, but win98 doesn't.
windows states that:

Primary IDE controller
Secondary IDE controller
Standard IDE/ESDI Hard Disk Controller

are all "not present, not working properly,
or does not have all the drivers installed (code 10)

i tried reinstalling the drivers, but it says
that the best driver is currently installed... my IDE cables to the drives are all secure, and my two hard drives are working fine. also, none of the 'code 10'
devices are conflicting.

any input would be greatly appreciated

Sounds like you have multiple conflicting entries in your registry.
Run REGEDIT go to
"Hkey_Local_Machine/Enum/MF" and delete the MF tree.

I have th EXACT same problem with my primary adn secondary controllers. Cant access my DVD either. Ive tried running REGEDIT and deleting the MF tree but after the reinstalling of drivers the samme problem occured. :(

Have no clue what to do and would like an easier way out than reinstalling.

It may be sounds stupid, but ... did You try antivirus soft? Virus can cause that problem.
Deleting whole ENUM key also sometimes work for me, but You will have to reinstall all drivers.
Editing "noIDE" key in registry is also way to go.

Absolutely sounds like the form virus. Not usually too destructive but can make it impossible to access FAT32. The problem is that if you don't have anti-virus software installed, you can't run it from CD. If you boot from a 98 boot disk, you can run Norton (or other) in DOS mode. This virus will spread to anything bootable, so write protect your A-disk and scan any disks that you have used to boot this computer including any harddrive utility disks. Let us know!

And just in case...If you have any device drivers for the CD loaded in your config.sys file disable that as well--on occasion there is a driver present that is 16bit only....

Hmm well no virueses found, will try and edit my config.sys etc files but tis a new problem on an existing system. The problem started yesterday out of the blue. Everything was running fine before.

No access to D: or A: dangit :(

still no joy, there i no effect when editing out my cd driver in config.sys either.

Could my Bus be busted? just like that?

or should i try downloading busdrivers, where can i find such things easiest?

Back up two steps. Disconnect the IDE cable from the CDROM to eliminate it as a possible problem. You might have to reconfigure the harddrive jumper temporarily, some are different on standalone than master. You shouldn't have any drivers or references to the CDRom in autoexec.bat or config.sys with 98. Then check your Device Manager for error messages. Try recording all the drivers listed for the IDE controllers, rename them in DOS (in case you need to go back), reboot with 98 boot disk with CDROM support (hook it back up), and reinstall drivers from CD upon prompt. Sometimes 98 seems to use the same IDE driver files over instead of replacing them. This will force them to be replaced. I don't know why, I just know it has worked for me several times. Ruslan???

Well, I think these code 10 error messages could be caused by some attempts to install the 16bit DOS drivers of this CDROM... Have you tried you were you using this kind of configuration?

Ih these situations, you should check "Control Panel", "System" option, folder "Performance" (I'm trying to translate my portuguese-based windows, so some options can have another name :D ).

It should have error messages warning you that Windows is running in "DOS compatibility mode".

Maybe, for a simple configuration, someone has disabled the 32bits disk controllers, so click (on this window) in the "File System" button and check if all the options are unchecked.

These configurations are not so common, but maybe they could be related to your problem.

Well everything is working fine now. Finally caved in and reinstalled Win98 over the old one, and everything is good now.

Guess the reason for my cd or a drive wasnt working will never be known except for the fact that my IDE Controller was acting up.

I think if we're all being real honest, that happens a lot more than we'd like to admit. I don't profess to understand all the engineering but after 32 years of working with computers, I'm pretty darn good at making then work right-regardless of whether I can explain the technical details of what I've done.
