Folks,

I'm running the following:

- Asus A7V w/ AMD Athlon/Thunderbird 850Mhz
- 256meg. PC133 SDRAM
- Windows ME
- Adaptec Easy CD Creator 4.02e

I have the following drive(s) setup(s) on the machine -- keep in mind that I have two (2) onboard IDE controllers:

- ATA100 IDE Primary Master = WD 20gig. ATA100 HD

- IDE Primary Master = Acer 50X CD-ROM
- IDE Primary Slave = Acer 12x8x32 CD-R/W
- IDE Secondary Master = Iomega ZIP 100

Can anyone tell me why I might not be getting great transfer rates on the Acer CD-ROM master according to Easy CD Creator drives tests? Are those accurate? The read speeds (with DMA enabled) are 4x-6x. That's pathetic. I get 10x-12x read speeds on the Acer CD-R/W slave.

Any ideas are welcome and appreciated.

I'd set it up this way:

Primary Master - Hard Drive
Primary Slave - Iomega Zip 100
Sec Master - Acer 12x8x32 CD-R/W
Sec Slave - Acer 50X CD-ROM

(always try & have a burner on the other IDE channel if possible)

You'll get conflicting opinions on this but I've always had the best success with the burner as a master and the ROM as it's slave.

Thanks to those who responded -- while I was eagerly awaiting responses, I managed to burn 6 coasters with Adaptec's Easy CD Creator 4.03. Yay.

As I noted before, the ASUS A7V motherboard features TWO (2) IDE controllers, one of which is a Promise ATA100 controller. It likes my hard drive, so I'm not moving it. It's a wasted motherboard if I don't use it.

As of this morning, I've switched my configuration to the following:

- ATA100 Primary Master = WD 20gig. HD
- ATA100 Secondary Master = Iomega ZIP 100

- Primary Master (the second controller)=
Acer 50X CD-ROM
- Secondary Master (the second controller)=
Acer 12x8x32 CD-R/W

I'll try burning another CD-R as soon as I can get a spool of CD-Rs. I've ruined the 6, as I mentioned, and they had nice slim jewel cases. Thank God these are cheaper than ZIP disks :-)

I borrowed a copy of Nero from a friend of mine to see if the software was the problem -- v. 5.2.2(?). It wasn't the latest version. It didn't list all available burn speeds for my CD-R/W -- only the 12X. Needless to say, it fried my 8X CD-R.

Has anyone successfully used Nero with the Model 1208A burner from Acer? I noticed that, although they included Adaptec Easy CD Creator 4 in the box, their burner isn't listed as support on the Roxio website.

OK -- here's an update. After painfully uninstalling Easy CD Creator 4, I downloaded the demo version of Nero 5.4.4. Identified my Acer burner like a charm. Burned a CD-R at 8X like a charm.

Now...why won't Easy CD Creator 4, which ships with the stupid drive, work worth a crap? Is it just that bad?

I called tech support, and the guy who answered was either jerking off or taking a dump. The grunting and heavy breathing forced me to bid him adieu a little more quickly than I would have preferred. Stupid Acer tech support.
