I have an Iomega ZipCD External CD writer, and after installing the software for it, as well as hooking it up through the USB port, it can read any kind of CDs just fine. Except for recordable media (CD-R, CD-RW). My system lags terribly if I put either kind of those CDs inside of the drive.. and never actually recognizes a CD inside of the tray.

My father uses this very same drive, I brought it to my computer to attempt using it. He has no problems with it. We're both using it under Windows 98.

I can provide additional information as per request, and I would very much appreciate help if anyone could offer as such.. thank you.

What make/model is your motherboard. I've seen a lot of voltage problems with ASUS USB ports (usually solvable with an externally powered USB hub) which can result in all manner of quirky USB devices...

My machine is a Compaq 5070 Presario, which has a SiS 530 motherboard in it, which I have not altered in any way (other than adding a 128 mb ram stick).
