I am having a problem with W2k or Winme reading disks from my cdrom and cdrw. The setup when the problem started was:

Secondary Master: Generic 44X CDROM
Secondary Slave: Dimond Data 32x10x4

The slave was the first to go. Popped in a disk and would not read. After a couple of reboots the master went. Bios is recognising the dirves and I can see them in explorer, but when you try to access with a cd in it says "please insert disk"

I thought it may be a faulty cdrom, so I have removed it and replaced it with a 2month of cdrw (Diamond Data) as the secondary master.

Went back to bios 1006, no luck. Back to 1007. Tried to reinstall cdrw drivers and no luck. I would like to troubleshoot this under w2k, any suggestions would be appreciated....

I'd think maybe a bad cable or secondary controler. Try changing out the cable first. If that dosen't help try moving one of the CD roms to the Primary slave position and see if it'll read your cd's there.

I'd have a hard time buying that both CD roms died that close to each other.

Isolated the problem. The cdrw on the secondary master has failed. Its weird that this had an effect on the other cdrom. I was trying differant cables and ide controllers and the cdrom came back. Tried the other and no luck.

Thanks for your suggestion.
