setup.exe/ e:drive not ready

Final CD installation of a 3 part module failed: When launching the setup.exe from cd-rom (drive d) message box indicates e: drive not ready (zip drive). Have already checked the .inf file which already points to the d: drive. Computer is Compaq 400+, running nt4.

i take it you have a zip drive?
could you not put a zip disk in the drive and try it again?
without knowing the software you're loading I dont know why it would want to inspect hardware drives....

Not sure exactly what you are installing, but I assume it's an OS. If you use a Windows 98 or ME boot disc, it installs a temporary Ramdrive (pseudo harddrive) in your memory, which disappears on reboot because it is volatile memory. Thus, the CDROM becomes the E-Drive (temporarily), and the OS will continue looking for files on the E-Drive. Once the OS has been partially loaded, the CDROM becomes the D-Drive. Just redirect the system to the same file, only change the letter E to D.

Thanks for the responses, now for the rest of the story.

I'm installing a three part training module for a fire department. Two parts of the installation went without any trouble. E drive is assigned to the zip. When launching the setup.exe ( from the cd-rom drive D) for the application a message box appears indicating that the E drive is not ready? Weird. I've already checked the .inf file, tried in the safe mode, installing from control panel/MS-DOS/Start>Run/ect.., I intend on trying the practical things like installing on a non-NT machine. I have a suspicion that it might be a missing DLL and, or the cd-rom version is spinning to fast for this file format, since the installation instructions refer to Windows 95. :rolleyes:

actually, having thought about this, i am sure if you insert a disk it willbe fine. i get the same drive not ready when booting my pc (its a scsi jaz); but not when a disk is in.

Here's something of benefit...I've seen what your describing assuming that your running NT 4.0 as the OS, which, (as you probably already know)is not Plug-n-Play enabled....However Microsoft buried the option, a PnP driver is available on the NT 4.0 Server and Workstation CD-ROMs! Using NT Explorer, go to the \drvlib\pnpisa\x86 directory on the NT 4.0 CD-ROM and find the pnpisa.inf file, (this geared toward the phoenix bios) also, there's a registry change that can be made in the "source" subkey, under HKLM\SFW|Micro\Win\CurVer\Setup\, or search the registry for source, What troubles me about my particular installation is that the other two cd's installed fine.?

Hats off to Mr. Myagi, Master Tech! E drive not ready? Make ready (put a zip disc in the bay)then proceed with the installation. Okay. There is another step that could be taken; Goto Zip Tools> and "turn-off" make disk non-removeable. Cheers :D
