This may seem a silly post but .....
I recently bought a P4 1.8Ghz, 256MB XP PC - a huge upgrade as I was running a Pentium 66 beforehand! Anyway, I downloaded DOOM thinking at last I will be able to play this game but ......... it doesn't run as it should. Jerky when firing, jerky sound!!! Surely it should run OK on this PC? Other more sophisticated games do. Is DOOM too old for the PC?
Any help appreciated.

A P66 should be able to run Doom without any problems. Are you using the DOS version or DOOM for Windows? Look here: http://www.idsoftware.com/archives/doomarc.html

It's also possible that XP doesn't support this software.

use windows compatibility mode to set the OS type back to support that old of game

Doom, is compatible with XP, as long as you run it with one of the newer ports such as JDoom, or Doom Legacy avaidable here
