I am having trouble setting up a simple 3 pc network, I can't get the computers to see or use one another. All have sharing setup, I can ping them but I can't see them in network places. All are in the same workgroup, all running tcp/ip. The odd thing is one the pc's is used to dial out to the 'net, and that part is working fine- the other 2 pc's can dial out through this pc. This network fined fine under win98 until we upgraded to xp pro.

1) Make sure the NIC cards are 100% compatable with WinXP. If you need to, connect the one to the web, and download the XP drivers for the individual cards (this is a possibility).

2) Try to search (find) the other computers.

3) Make sure the workgroup is the same in all 3

4) Check out your hub (if you're using one)

5) Check, double, and triple check all sharing, make sure the drives themselves are shared (in Win Explorer, right click the drive, select properties, then go to sharing)..

Hope one of these helps!

The network cards are realtek RLT8139, they seem to work ok in other xp networks I have set up. I tried hooking up 2 of the pc's with a crossover cable that is known good and I get the same results. The only network function that works is sharing the dialup connection. It shows no computers under the workgroup in network places.

Make sure netbios is enabled, and make sure file and printer sharing for M$ networks is turned on...

did you get the windows Xp updates?

I know one update will disable the nic card.

I had the same problem with 4 pc running xp not able to see each other. I then got them to see each other but I couldnt connect to each other.

Are you useing DHCP or static ip?

This sound just like the problem I'm having!

I am trying to connect 98 to XP Home. I have Internet Connection Sharing on the XP box, and the 98 machine can connect through it. If I open Network places, I see both computers listed, but if I double-click the XP machine's name, it says I need a passwored for \\computername\IPC$

I don't have a password set on the XP machine (I've tried with and without), I have the Guest account turned on, I tried creating a username on the XP box identical to the 98 box, but nothing works! (except ICS!)

On the XP Home box, under Event Viewer, I see a logon success showing the Guest account, but then a logon failure saying that the account has not been granted privelages!

I can't install NetBeui because the XP machine is OEM and just has a restore CD!

Ok you said you created an account on the xp box but did you set the shares up so that that user could access the shared device (hd, cd or printer)? You might have to delete the share and then go back and reset it (had to do that). Hope this helps.
