When I'm connecting my laptop and desktop using a printer cable, do I have to then do something like "Install New Hardware" to get them to recognize each other first?

No. Go into Network and Dial-up Connections, start the "Make new connection" wizard" then select "Connect Directly to another computer".

The wizard will walk you through the rest I believe.

Well I decided to use a USB connection instead, but when I go thru the wizard there is no choice for USB, just serial & port. Will USB not work?
