SBLive(Sound) and XP

Here is my problem. I have a MSI 6330 Lite MB, 500+mb of memory, 2 40 gig hd(One for system and one for MP3s), 64 mb Evil Kyro AGP, Real Hollywood Decoder card, 3 com nic,and realtek nic, surfboard cable modem, 24x cdrw, 12x Dvd, 1000 AMD Athalon and a SBLive Plat. 5.1 w/ Live Drive, all running WinXP Pro. I have quite a few programs installed on this. Two of these programs were XP Plus! and XP Media Update. One day my sound quit working but not after I installed these programs directly. I reinstalled drivers and it worked again. Then a couple of days later when I turn on my computer and there is no sound device. In the Device manager, there is the SBLive(WDM) and the SBLive Gameport and the devices are working properly. I go to control panel and then sounds and multimedia and it does not have any audio devices listed. Only the wave modem is listed but no SBLive.

Anyways, I have another machine just generic with SiS 7018 sound and it was working fine and one day last week it did the same thing. So, I went into the Add/Remove Programs and uninstalled XP Plus! and XP Media Update, restarted and there it showed back up in the control panel's, sounds and multimedia. So I think great, All I have to do is go home and unistall these things. (Before this I have already been screwing around with the drivers for three weeks, contacted Creative Support and gave them my scenario. They sent me a detailed message saying to rename the extensions of some files and then delete the SBLive folder in Creative and then reinstall with the updated XP drivers. This did not work previously.) So back to the story, I still have no sound but it says they are installed and the devices are working properly in the Device Manager just no audio device's in control panel's sounds and multimedia. Anyone else have this problem? Anyone out there no a fix short of reinstalling? That is my next step, but I definately think I found a bug with either the XP Plus! or XP Media Update and WinXP. I am running XP, and the only problems with sound I fixed with updated drivers.

I would think that the problem lies with the cards drivers, ratehr than XP Plus, which I use as well..

I wouldn't think so either but that is what fixed my second machine hassle free. Everything was in the device manager as working properly but in the control panel's sounds and multimedia there was no audio device found. I took off the XP Plus! and XP Media Update and it came back. It was also SiS 7018 sound and not Creative but I have installed and reinstalled every which driver every which way you can think of. In the 4 weeks I have been messing with this thing I have tried everything short of drop kicking it. Like I said also, my next step is reinstalling the OS and that looks like what I am going to have to do. Oh well. Creative sent me a help message but that did not bring in any audio devices back in the control panel. Bummer for me I guess. Just a few thoughts, things I've noticed when using SB LIVE! with WINXP.

First of all, don't use the updated drivers from microsoft (windows update), get them from Creative instead. If you ever do a windows update, it will tell you there are updated sound drivers, but don't use them. Second, sometimes for no apparent reason, Windows will switch your speaker arrangement. Check that out, because I only have 2 speakers, and Windows switched me to 5 speakers for no reason. Lastly, I was having some problems with my sound card not working. It was showing up in device manager and the whole bit, but wouldn't play anything. I switched it to a different non-shared PCI slot and it was all good.

Don't know if this will help you at all, but I thought I'd share anywa :D

Thanks for the advice. However, How can I check if Windows swithced it to 5 speakrs when it says there is nothing to change it with or where would I go to change that? There is no audio device in the control's panel, sounds and multimedia. That is the main problem. It says there is no Creative card installed if I do diagnostics and it I try the mixer then it Fails to load the Plug-ins. Thanks for the help though, Can you think of anything else. I just wish Creative would learn to write software, My XP home is on the shelf, I figured out my irq problem thanks to another post but I had nothing but problems with the driver update from Creative
It only updates the applications, I can't install the apps from the cd since XP wont let me so I install the driver update from Creatives site and they don't work, The problem lies in Audio HQ . When I click the speaker icon to set up my inspire 5.1 surround speakers I get " This program has encountered an error and will be closed, do you want to send a error report to Microsoft "
I have clicked yes , I had this problem when XP first came out and you think Creative would have written compatible drivers by now
I am running an Asus p4b266 P4 1.6 gig 512 emgs ddr ram , Promise raid controller ( XP drivrs wouldn't work, they have a new set out ) 2 Quantum 30 gig drives in raid 0 striping
I am going to wait a while then try XP again when newer drivers are out and yes I installed the raid drivers during set up <img src="confused.gif" border="0">

I read somewhere that if you set the compatibility settings on audioHq's .EXE file to windows 95 it clears up alot of problems (i think it was on winamp's forums). I tried it and it take care of that Illegal opreation error running Audiohq. Go to winamp.com and check their forum, they have a area dedicated to SBlive with XP problems with alot of solutions

I guess I'm one of the lucky ones. I've been using my SB Live with Windows XP for a few months without any problems. Like someone said earlier, I stay away from the "Windows Update" drivers, and only use the drivers from Creative's website.

Ditto on the first part, but I am using the Windows Update Creative drivers for my original 1998 retail Live! Value here and have experienced no problems what so ever with them. I have though seen problems with the newer Live! 1024 range of cards though with the WU drivers, so I would have thought in this case CL changed the spec slightly of the 1024 series, hence some of the problems, but I have not seen any problems with the original series of Live! cards.
