ntoskrnl.exe corrupted

When changing my boot screen, I replaced my ntoskrnl.exe with one that was apparently corrupted. Now windows won't start because it can't display the damn load dialogue. I also don't have a Windows XP CD because this is on my laptop which came with it pre-loaded; all I have is a set of recovery CDs which would just format and reset everything which I really don't want to have to do. Does anyone know how I can get around this problem and restore the file?

This happened to me and the only way I could fix it was by install/repair from the CD and manually installing the ntoskrnl.exe file. Good luck...d;(

Talk to your vendor, or the manufacture of the laptop. See if you can get a full version of XP, so you can perform the repair. This is something you should have, period. Don’t allow them to give you any run-around.

Push F8 like a madman when windows first starts loading. See if you can boot to a command line and replace the file...

If you used BootXP to install the boot screen, when you push F8 you'll see that it replaced your default boot option. Select "Windows XP Pro/Home" instead of the default and Windows should boot right up (I had the same problem ). :(

obviously you don't work for an oem company. the recovery cd is all you are allowed to give a customer with a brand new machine now. the only way a customer can get a full xp/2k/98/me cd now is by purchasing the retail copy at a higher price than the oem version.

How could you tell? :D

I'm the type that would buy a laptop without the OS anyway ;) , but if it had to buy preload, I would expect the full version, even if that meant that I would have to pay more money. :cool:

fair enough, drop by my store any day. Our sales team would love to have a customer that actually wants to spend more money than they have to. :D
