okay, well its a little more than that. okay, i've got XP Pro, 40 X cd rom, HP CDRW. i installed Roxio Platinum 5 and installed the patch for XP. When i rebooted, i got a blue screen. i had to restart and use LKGC. i removed Roxio and installed again. still the same problem. also, it never installed the patch properly meaning it never updated to Roxio 5.1. I removed Roxio again, rebooted and now XP doesn't recognize my CD ROM and CDRW. it just shows up in device manager with exclamation points. i've already uninstalled both, did a search for new hardware, but no luck. I have to order the CD for the HP CDRW that has the drivers on it. I know i've seen problems on here similar to this. any advice?

Couple of things for you to read, it means messing with the registry I am afraid - so please, please set a restore point and export your reg BEFORE you start.

When you use a 3rd party burnin program it is important to disable recording for the cd burner in windows xp and reboot. The recording tab can be found by right clicking the burner in my computer - when you have got it back that is.
Nero works much much better with XP if you don't want to use the native burning. Nero can be obtained from Nero webpage
Good Luck!

Just had to comment on the fact that there have been so many problems with roxio software (who is the company that supplied xp with its native burning ability, and yet they dont seem to get along with there own products. I for one use B's Recorder Gold (Came with my sony burner) and it works great in XP, and I also have not disabled the built in, I use both. Something pretty odd about that dont you think.

Well here is an update. the problem is fixed! I used the system restore and that got back my cd rom and CD RW. Since I had problems with Roxio in the first place, I decided to install Nero 5.5.7.2 and it worked great! So I guess I'll be using Nero. I also noticed in previous posts some people having problems with Roxio. Thanks for everyone who helped.
