I went to share files in XP pro and I have noticed that there are zero permissions or password to set. Am I missing something or did M$ really do something so stupid as to have the automatic default to share to everyone with full permissions? The only option I see is to make it read only to everyone, but not with a password.
I have to be missing something. Not even M$ would be dumb enough to do this.

There is a password.. when you connect to an XP share remotly it requests a username/password. they must match one of the users who's profiles are located on the local computer. If your connect from a 2k or XP box, and your logged into an account that happens to be identical to the XP one (same username/password) the XP will not prompt and show you the share.

The file system must be NTFS in order to apply permissions, (if you knew that and it is, sorry).
Also, I use Pro, and there is a permissions button in the share tab for each folder I share, so I have to wonder if there is a difference here between pro and home. BTW are you using home, or pro?

The file system is NTFS and it's Pro. I can't find the NTFS permissions anywhere.
Oh, and I did know about NTFS, but I did ask for free help so I take any answer as a good answer. Thanks!

Now, I have to be missing something. There has to be a switch somewhere that enables me to see the NTFS permissions or something. I feel like I'm going nuts and I'm really getting put off to this OS really quick. Anyone else care to take a wack?

By default, XP enables something they call "simple file sharing." [Go to control panel/tools/folder options/view, and at the bottom of the list, you'll see that simple file sharing is checked [and recommended?].
If you disable that, the file permissions and sharing procedures will begin to resemble W2K.
Hope that's what you're looking for.

Yea, basically "Simple File Sharing" sucks. It seems to me like an XP Home edition feature that they forgot to take out of Pro...

I found the setting on my system to be using simple file sharing as well. I wonder why I am seeing the permissions button under sharing, and I also have a security tab, where you do not see either. I am setup to login to a domain, verses a workgroup; I presume that has something to do with this. This is sort of a mystery...
