How do I remove Windows Media 8?

How do I go about removing windows media player 8? I would much rather be useing WMP6.4 which I have been but WinXP keeps putting file associations back to WMP8.

just change the file that opens WMP to mplayer2.exe in the same folder http://forums.windrivers.com/cgi-bin/forum1/noncgi/wink.gif
