[RESOLVED] XP and Roadrunner Cable Service

I have a client who I managed to talk WinXP Home version into...well all if fine and said and done...but when he brought the system home (brand new p4-1.5ghz system) and was playing with it he decided to install his Roadrunner service. The tech support guy he talked to on the phone said they dont have support for XP right now and probably wont until sometime next year. WTF? The guy did say on the phone that as long as he has a NIC that he can get it to work. XP is still so new to me and the client I guess that we are just totally clueless and lost on how to set this up. Anyone have any ideas? Or a website or instructions on how to do this setup with high-speed cable modem on WinXP Home ed.? (FYI...the NIC is built into the motherboard...its one of those new MSI p4 motherboards with the built-in LAN near the USB ports.....)

I'm assuming the RoadRunner service is xDSL and the interface you're wanting to connect is ethernet. What I don't know is what type of authentication RoadRunner uses. Is it PPPoE, PPPoA, DHCP...? I know that XP has built-in PPPoE support. Setting up DHCP shouldn't be that difficult. I don't know about PPPoA, tho.

Lets put it this way....I know NOTHING about Roadrunner, OR WinXP. I have never even SEEN roadrunner or its external modem. But yesh, I do know that he is trying to do it by ethernet. Thats all I know or can tell you at this time. But if anyone has instructions, or a website, or something to get me started I'm sure I can figure it out.

I am not 100% sure what you issues are but enable DHCP. That should really be all you need to do. Set it to obtain IP address automatically.

I would uninstall the RoadRunner software or at least disable it. Make sure if you have a firewall that it is allowing access to the modem so that it can get its IP address.

I am not sure what he has for a modem but make sure that it is also functioning. Proper lights and such.

Also in your network properties you can set it to show a systray icon. That is another way to know that your network is at least connected. Also, check that your NIC is functioning properly under xp.

Roadrunner is cable service, no PPPoE, or PPPoanything. hook the modem to the nic card card and run IE's setup for a LAN. I have no problems with XP and roadrunner

Well I have XP Pro with Road Runner in the Tampa, FL area and it works fine. RR is a DHCP authentication. You need to setup TCP/IP with Obtain IP address automatically and Obtain DNS server address automatically. Further more under the advanced section for TCP/IP make sure DHCP is enabled. If you have done all this then RR should work no problem. OH DO uninstall the RR software. RR does not need software to work, nor does it need a login.

UPDATE>
this guy was trying to use the USB functions of the cable modem...i told him to just unplug the usb cables and try using his ethernet cable and NIC...he was also missing the q0s packet scheduler protocol in his LAN settings....fixed it over the phone with him. he's up and runnin now.....

Can we get you to trim down the picture size on your signature? It’s all good, just that when people are on the site, they don't necessarily want big pictures on the page. What if someone is looking over their shoulder? It is hard to say “I am actually doing some research” when there is a picture of your ride plastered all over the forum…
