I've started experiencing a rather annoying problem since installing XP. While playing a game online my system will suddenly reboot. It only happens after a few hours of play (sorry I can't say exactly how long). My system was fine for the first few days after the install but here lately it'll just reboot with no warning at all.

I'm wondering if it could be heat but it never did this before with win98SE.

Could it be my cable connection? Again it never did this before.

Or could it be something in the network code of the game I'm playing?

Or could it be something else?

My system:

C566@764
ABIT SE6
GeForce 2 with the 22.88(I think. It's the latest beta release for XP at guru3d) driver
SB Live
512 RAM
Cable modem
Linksys NIC
Linksys router
Win98SE (latest updates)
XP Home (latest updates)

I'm dual booting till I get the hang of XP and am sure I like it which I do except for this... :(

Another question I have is about DirectX. I downloaded the 8.1 version of DX and installed it on my XP partion. It says it was installed successfully but when I try to run DXDiag there's nothing showing in the folder at all. I looked for the show files option but couldn't find it. Any ideas of what happened or if DXDiag will just not show up? Or do you think the install even took?

Thanks for the help

If you are using the newest Detonator Driver for your GeForce card, try reverting to to the slightly older 22.50 version found here www.guru3d.com I had the same problem where my machine would reboot when I quit a certain game (DAoC). reverted the driver per the DAoC FAQ and it took care of it.

Hope this helps!

As XP already has DX8.1 installed by default, you shouldn't have needed to install the Win2K version that went official this week. It doesn't state XP compatiability on the MS download page. If this started after re-installing DX8.1 then it suggests that the DX installation is the likely culprit. I would also try running the Celeron at it's rated speed as the CPU could be on it's way out if it has been overclocked for a very long period of time, expecially if the cooling is not sufficient.

Thanks for the input guys :) Actually I'm very pleased with the performance of the newest leaked det drivers and would really hate to go back to an earlier version.

And I didn't know XP came with 8.1 (guess I should have researched it more.

I think what I'll end up doing is formating and installing XP since I feel a lot more comfortable with it now plus I can definitely see huge improvements with my system performance overall.

If it's still doing the reboot thing after I do a reinstall then I'll look into other areas like the down clocking the CPU and stuff. I've had this one overclocked for not quite a year yet but I know overclocking really stresses a CPU.

Thanks again

Ok of all the XP Rebooting problems I've worked with I've found this to almost always be the cause.

In the "System Restore" settings theres and option to restart the computer in the event of an error. Uncheck this option.
Once this option is unchecked the restart will turn into a stop error.. look up the stop error on Microsoft technet

Hope this helps solve your problem :)
