Can a PC with Windows XP Home Ed. log on to a domain or server? My boss goofed and ordered one with Home Ed., and I'm trying to get it to log on our server. The server is running Windows 2000.

You need XP Pro to log onto a Domain.

Yeah, he goofed all right. If it is Dell or another well-named vendor, you should have no problem changing that. Who ever it is, give them a call and tell them there was a mistake. They should just charge the difference in price, ask that you send back the cd/restore disks with XP home, and will send you Pro. I know this has been done before with MS works to MS Office. I am sure they will do the same with OS’s. Just be cordial on the phone, and tell them how much you love their systems :D :D :D !

Well, my boss called the vendor he bought the computer from, but the vendor won't allow a switch. We're not buying from him again. What I got from what my boss told me was that IBM only ships Home Ed. with certain computers and Pro Ed. with certain computers. The computers we got are only supposed to come with Home Ed. I don't know how much of that is true, and how much was just miscommunications between my boss and the vendor and then my boss and me. So basically, we're ordering 6 full XP Pro Ed. to put on these new computers.

no don't order Full pro editions as you can get the upgrades to pro and save some $$$!!!!

You can do a full clean install with the Upgrade

I don't know if he ordered the full or upgrade ed. He did this yesterday, and they shipped today. :(

If it is the full, and you want upgrade instead, call the vender. They should authorize a second shipment, and you RMA the other ones. As long as you don't open any of the full, at most it will cost you shipping back for the RMA, and there might be a temporary hold on a credit card until the company receives the RMA. A lot of venders will support you on this. It is a matter of almost $600 in savings. I think it is worth it to save the money, even if it is for the company. The thing is you already lost money with the first purchase. The fact that the PC’s came with XP home should allow you to upgrade (legally). As stated, you don’t have to upgrade, you can do a full install from the upgrade disk. You just need a valid media form of an older/lesser OS (the XP home OS).
