Need to find out if this is the latest version.

My cousin got a computer with WindowsXP preinstalled in it, and Im curious as to knowing how new it is, or if they gave him an old copy.
His version is 5.1.2600 b2600
Is this a good thing? Or are there newer versions, like the ones in the stores?

Please help me out. ;)

The 2600 in the version is the final "gold" build of the software, therefore, your cousin has the most recent build, HOWEVER, there are about 10 megs worth of updates for the OS from windows update.

Best to download those too... :D

BTW, the retail and OEM version (pre-installed) are all the same version, just a Retail has a pretty box and manual

Cool, I still wonder about the 5.1 part. does that number change? Say if you bought a copy today? Would it be newer?

No, it would still be the same until microsoft release a Service Pack, which they then sometimes incorporate into later releases.
