The company I work doesn't have a large LAN and would like to run Office 2000 off the server. I installed it and have tried various ways to run it from my computer (shortcuts, mapped drives, etc.), but I get the message

"The application must be installed to run. Please run setup from the location where you originally installed the program."

A friend told me that I had to use a parameter with the setup command like /s or /i or something. Any help would be appreciated.

This might not help, sorry.

I don't think you can run office from a server because of the way it installs. It might if you copied ALL of the Office related Registry keys from the server to your computer.

Wouldn't that violate the license agreement also?

Well my boss thinks that if we only buy 5 licenses, install it on the server, and only 5 people at a time run the program from the server, it won't violate the license agreement. I'll try your suggestion, though.

The human animal never ceases to amaze me....tell him not to be so cheap. If it's going to be used to help a company make money, then it's worth paying for--simple cost-analysis.

Setup /s just installs everything needed to install FROM the server to each workstation.

I got it to work. I found the way to do it off of MS Office 2000 KB. You have to run setup /a to copy the setup files to a drive on the server. Then you map a drive from the workstation that you want to install Office on. During the install you have to specify that you want to run it off the server. It works then. It really sucks though. I hope my boss sees this and just decides to buy more licenses.

What's really funny is that 98% of the people that work here have Corel Suite 7 or 8 and are used to using it.

I have setup Office on the schools' servers
loads of times,
here's how...

Use
"setup /a"
on the server to run
a server installation.

Then on each workstation, run a setup
from location on the server.
(e.g. ours is \\ntsever\apps\office\setup.exe)

and choose the options that are right for
you.

You can choose for everything to
run from the server, but it'll probably
slow down your network.

Hope I helped.
