Word prompts this error every time it starts. "Spell checker is already in use" Click OK and it pops up again. Click x and it pops up again. I disabled the spell checker on the fly and it stoped. But then when you manually tell it to check page it says spell check complete even if there are mispelled words. HELP!!!

I don't mean to ask stupid questions, but have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling? http://forums.windrivers.com/cgi-bin/forum/smilies/cwm13.gif

Or use that lovely Detect and Repair tool under Help.

Good luck

A good trick for this one is to hop into Excel and try the spell checker there.

The reason for to try this is that the proofing tools are limited in Excel to purely spelling and does not include Grammar and Hyfernation as Word does.

If you get an error, regardless of what is says try renaming the proofing tools folder (c:\program files\common files\microsoft shared\proof) and then perform a reinstall (NOT A REPAIR).

If the problem persists after that then the problem is with one of the 20 odd registry entries that assist the application in using the proofing tools.

The spell checker is fairly simple and works by the files simply existing in a pre-determined location that the apps are made aware of by the registry and that's it.

In my experience normally it is nothing more that the proofing tools folder getting stuffed up.

NOTE: the custom dictionary is normally located with the proof folder so don't loose it!

I hope this helps! :)
