Here's the scenario... A user in my company was using a computer and left for whatever reason. I've setup another user on that computer but Office is still registered to the first person. How can I change the "registered user"? I know it really doesn't matter but people can be picky at times. It also helps to figure out who has files open across the network.

The user the software is registered is NOT the name used for locking open files. That is set in the options dialog. On company PC's, the user name for all software should be set to the same as the company name. Avoids this situation in the future.

I think there was a way to edit that in the registry, but I can't remember. I would say if it's that important, then uninstall Office, then Reinstall with the correct name.

If ever you need to alter the registered company you can use the following steps...
--------------
Steps Required To Change The User Information for Office 2000

In the Windows registry there are three blocks of keys which need to be removed to completely eradicate the knowledge of the current user information from the Office 2000 suite of applications.

1. Delete the registry keys found at the following locations;

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\OFFICE\9.0\WO RD\DATA

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\WINDOWS\CURR ENTVERSION
\UNINSTALL\{00000409-78E1-11D2-006097C998E7}

NOTE: The folder name denoted in red are the folders which need deleting.

2. Having removed the afore mentioned folders, re-run Office set-up. The set-up process proceeds as if Office is not actually installed on the machine.

3. Input the new desired User and Company details when prompted and complete the set-up.

4. Once set-up has completed start Microsoft Word and you will be prompted for user information specific to Word. Enter the details to match those entered in step 3.

Microsoft Office 2000 will now be internally registered with the newly entered User and Company details.
