good capture card for video editing

I'm looking for a new capture card for my system: Athlon 1.4Ghz, 512mb memory, 60 gig hard drive, Voodoo5 5500 AGP, Win2k. What is the best one I can get in the $300 or less range? It must be able to record high quality video and send it back out to tape.

For DV capture use Pinnacle Studio DV runs about $100 For analog I suggest Pinnacle Studio AV version 7 runs about $129 and captures full quality and outputs. Pinnacle is the best for vid cap. Have fun. :D

Scuba had a 4 days vecation Snow skiing in the austrien Alps :D

If you have a camera with DV/Ilink what ever the manufacturer call it then you can use a 25$ fire wire card with the correct software like Adobe premier 6 or Ulead media Studio or Sonic Foudary Vegas or Stoik Video Man that unlike the previus will cost you only 50$.

You can get a Pinnacle DV500+ with a Full version of Adobe Premier 6 for less then 500$ and this is a very good catch. That will also give you analog inputs and DVD exporting options.

Some Fire Wire cards are being bundeld with editing programs - Pinnacle Studio 7, Canopus somthing and ADS Pyro. this cards have special drivers for Video Editing and better support for video Issues.

Last but not Least is my favorit Pinnacle Targa 3000. Little more then 300$ but you can't beat it's extras....

you could try the AIW radeon 8500DV which would give you both a good capture card (according to reviews I've read) and also a gaming upgrade for your Voodoo 5.

You can try the ATI card but all you will get is bad Tech support (and with Video yo will need it) then will come the not working properly with standard NLE programs like Adobe Premier 6 and on the End is the Crappy Quality.

Get a seperated card for capturing the Video and seperated for display. You will not regret it.

I've been studying this subject for several months and I working on piecing together a system as I can afford it. I plan on going with the Pinnacle DV200, but that's still a couple of months off.
My question is what type of a video card do I need to go with it? Will a Geforce 2 or 3 work satisfactory? Do I need TV in? TV out? How much video memory do I need?

1. DV200 is NoNoNo
get the DV500+. prices are below the 500$ mark and it can do so much more.

Almost all display cards will do. you are starting to get into problems when you want dual monitor support.
some GF2 MX models will do it nice, others not work. Depend on the exact model and maker.

If you have a good Video card with TV out then you don't need a TV out on your display card.
In most cases to use the TV out on a display card you will have to reduce the res to 800X600. Do you really want to do such a thing.....

The DV500 is the one I've been looking at, not the 200. Just wasn't typing right Friday.

Where can I find out whose GF cards will work with it and which won't? I've looked around Pinnacle's site but hadn't found much more than general references. With the ones with problems, is driver problems or video memory problems or do they just don't work? What about the GF3s?

Thanks for all of the help. I have lots of questions because I can't afford lots of extra parts to try different combinations. Also I'm sure that others probably have similar questions.

Look in the DV500+ Forums....
Almost ll cards are working fine Until you try the dual monitor. the GF3 don't have a dual monitor option and generally working OK.

So what is a good card for less than say $200 for those of us not willing to spend a ton? Just a decent single monitor vid card that is good for vid editing. Something in particular that you would recommend.

Matrox cards, ATI Radeon 7500 is suppesed to be ok, SIS 315 with 128MB was ok in one monitor, GF3 from Asus I hear is OK.

I think that the GF2 from LEadTek was a BAD one.

I know that I am at risk of sounding completly stupid but (sigh) here I go.

I need to know what "capture" card I could use to just do some editing to "home movies" (analog) and then re record them to VHS tape.
I DON'T want to spend 500$ on a capture card (it isn't that serious to me YET).

Depend on the quality and how much you are willing to spend...
Look for used DC30+ or Used DV500+
You can also look for Dazzel AV bridge. The model that convert AV to DV and back. Not the USB models.

BTW, new display card that I suspect will work fine for video editing - ATI FireGL 4. If only the price was beter :(
