U-LEAD CAPTURES OK but playback is choppy and slow with dropped frames.
Adobe Premier 5.0 won't open the microsoft avi file made by U-Lead, to edit.
Any suggestions on how I can treak until I can get a Pinnacle or other with Premier 6.0 to capture and edit.

The DV captured files - even thow are called .AVI are actualy were created with a tiferand Codec (DV25) and so cant be Exported into Premier 5.1 which don't support this file format.
Adobe Premier 6 can - and with premier 6 you can also capture Direct from DV.

I have Herad before about problems concerning the Dazzle cards, your computer setup seem adequet - Even thow a Simple IDE Raid in Level '0' is recomended to all hi quality video works. DV is conciderd as such.

BTW - It's Ulead and NOT U-Lead.
