I changed the pca of my PC and now when I boot it says SMART Failure detected a problem on MAXTOR
Backup and replace your disk drive
A failure is imminent

What does this mean? Is this true that my almost NEW 40GB ATA/100 disk is damaged?

Thanks

Smart is a Self Monitoring system for the HD.
the HD can auto detect problems and warn you, so you can preper, backup and replace it.
But as far as i know - you mast runa small program from within windows in order to access the smart data.

I suggest that you go to the HD maker web site, over there you will normaly find a utility to test the HD and get more date on the problem.
In any case - if it's new, it's under warenty.
Replace is now and you will save yourself from data lost in the future.

Backup, and call the RMA number. If you have a credit card, they can ship you the new drive while you still have the old one, so you can try to Ghost the old drive to the new one. Backup first anyway.

Most companys will honor a smart warning as a failed drive before it acutually fails...

Okay, a DUMB question about SMART.

I'm running WD drives, and I still get a SMART status on boot up. I had thought, that SMART was for Maxtor drives.

What little proggie do I need to run to turn that critter off?

Smart is for all drives that support Smart and it's a Standard. All new drives support it.
You will need a program such as EZsmart.
