The Games of Yesterday

Don't get me wrong, I love UT and Return to Castle Wolfenstien, however, I really miss some of the old games of 5 or 10 years ago. I know I could dual boot to a older OS from Windows XP, but I'd like to find a 386/486 Emulator or something to run a few older DOS based games from Windows XP. Most of them are role playing games, King's Quest V and Sam and Max Hit the Road.

Ahhh.... Games that didn't use blazing 3D effects or Dolby surround sound.... Back when theme and fun seemed to matter more.

during highschool i loved playing startrek 25th anniversary. that game just KICKED *** . that and castles II and STUNTS. stunts ROCKED. you could build your own tracks! uhh and battletech! yeah battletech! and a little later on when aol went big, multiplayer battletech!!! yeah!!!! wooo!!! and the original airwarrior!

doom, duke nukem 3d, doom. those games rocked.

and doom was the height of id game experience creation. sure the quakes look better and some argue the levels are better but i still feel doom to play the best. am looking to the new doom and here's hoping id does the name justice.

I was really into the text quests like Infocom produced: the Zork storylines, Planetfall (I even built a 3D model of the environment - I was such a geek :rolleyes: ), etc.

The first "3D first-person shooter" (sort of) I played was <a href="http://www.classicgaming.com/vault/roms/appleiiroms.Airheart33325.shtml" target="_blank">Borderbund's Airheart</a>. Anyone else play that?

That site has brought back memories, let me tell ya :cool:

W00t!!! I used to play planetfall until my eyes bled..

The alien celery at the beginning... mopping up that alien slime from the ambassador, getting on the escape pod.. escaping the pod after landing in the ocean.. finding that robot, making it work again.. exploring the landscape..

I like the Space Quest series though I only played 2, 4, and 6. The King's Quest series though I only played a couple of them. I had a game called Thexder for my Tandy 1000 that was pretty cool. I also loved the original Wolfenstein. I even downloaded it from <a href="http://www.theunderdogs.com," target="_blank">www.theunderdogs.com,</a> but it was a bit too quick to play. Theunderdogs.com seems to be down now. :(

My brother would play Gunship and other flying combat games. He would take notes on the missions during the games breifings to look at when he was "flying". He's in the military now which is no surprise.

HEY, I remember that game! I played it on my Tandy 1000, too! If I remember correctly, you piloted a robot/mech that could transform into a jet with a press of the down arrow. In robot mode, you had a heat seeking laser. I can remember playing that game for hours and being very frustrated, and very entertained.

How about Chopper Commando on DOS? Umm.. Escape from Hell comes to mind (similar engine as Ultima 5&6...)

Ah, the good ole' days of Tank Wars and Scorched Earth. Dialing on of your favorite 100 BBSs and see what games were recently added, downloading them at a killer 300BpS, then working up to a 2400 "Baud" modem....

Those were the good ole days...

And we can't forget the Atari 2600....

I can understand that. It took at least 15 minutes to get through the first level, and either my brother or I would die quickly in the second level. We never made it past level 2. And no save option, either!

I had that game, too. Didn't have a choice of transmissions (manual or automatic). Engine blew if you didn't switch gear. If you touched another car or the side of the road, you crashed. If you screwed up, you got to start all over. Kids today have it easy! :D

I remember waiting patiently for my turn only to blow the engine in the Ferrari becuase I forgot to switch into second gear. Got up to 80 before it croaked! :eek: :D

I still love pulling out my X-Wing. We used to play that for hours on end in college, we would make underclassmen with computers go out and buy and leave their rooms open for us. We would have one guy fly the ship while the other would be R2 and do all of the controls.

Of course also previously mentioned, I have now got to find myself a version of scorched earth.

classics - I remember extremely long load times. Would insert the disk and have time to do other things while waiting for the game to load

Believe it or not, I still on occasion play Tie Fighter Collectors CD ROM

Elite (on 086 with cga monitor) I played this for nearly a year and had pages and pages of trading statistics and good planets for pirate bashing. Then Doom, I played this so much, laughing all the way (opening and closing doors real quick just to hear the screams of pain as some hapless Imp blasted some other beastie). Sadly, I admit to still loading Doom now, with the openGL patch, because I miss that fun element in gaming.

I miss the fun, too. It seems that with games today becoming more and more realistic and complex, that some people take them WAY too seriously. The whole point of a game is for fun and entertainment. If it isn't any of those things to me, then what's the point?

Maybe a dedicated 486 DOS gaming system? There are 486's around that people can't give away. I'm throwing away working DX2/66 boards with 8M, and at the moment I needed to hack an old DOS program for work so I threw some cards into a DX4/100 m/board & it's lying on the bench with a monitor hanging off it.

I still like a burst of Commander Keen, Cosmo or Wolfenstein 3D occasionally.

Thexder was a Sierra game as well as all the Quests--King's, Space, Hero's, Police...and don't forget Leisure Suit Larry....Played them all (I owned a small retail store and played with the 'inventory' inbetween customers....) :D

I stopped burning them when I got 2 CDs full. Must have spent 3 weeks collecting them :rolleyes:

MAME (DOS version) is also the best thing to slap onto an older 486 for those who are looking for a "project" to get into :D

I passed King's Quest 4 with the most points possible(still got the touch) on Sunday. It ran great and with sound under Windows XP too.

I remember playing a old text game called Rouge as well. When me and a group of friends got together, I can remember asking our parents history questions to get Leasure Suit Larry totally unlocked.

As far as MAME goes, The arcade version of Micheal Jackson's Moonwalker was the best. Especially since two can play simultaniously.

It nice to see there are others like me.

I had a game called Cloudburst on my old Vic-20. Also as I mention in other post, Loderunner on the AppleIIc before Commodore Vic or c-64 were out. I also had (still have) Silent ServiceII for the C-64 laying around somewhere.

Damn, these threads are bringing back memories..... How many of youz used to get Compute! magazines and enter the programs from them in your Commodore or IBM/clone computers?

Like Poseidon, I also still like to bring out TIE Fighter (X-Wing collectors version for 3d acceleration and better graphics) every once in a while. Unfortunately, I don't know if I could stand the graphics in Privateer(and it's expansion) to play it yet again, and EA never responded to my emails about remaking the flight engine to more modern standards and releasing it as a special collector's edition. But that was probly one of my favorite games I ever played. Oh well, guess I gotta wait for Freelancer to come out......

Played alot of console games. I remember I had Intellivision with all sorts of games Pitfall, Burgertime, Bomb Squad, B-17 Bomber, then upgraded to Nintendo. Brewer and I would play these games for hours. Mario Bros, Hockey, Zelda,1943. Dam, those games were fun.

Call me old fashioned but the games of yesteryear were better than the games today because with ****ty graphics and tin can sound they had to put more into making a game interesting and fun, they also had to put more into the story. Now a game is cool just because of the 80/20 cutscene to gameplay ratio :rolleyes:
