I'm almost afraid to ask, but what is TFC?

TFC as I know it is Team Fortress Classic. Mod for Half Life that comes in the form of a 80mb "patch".
used to play it a lot until I discovered beta 3 of CS

How does Half Life compare to Q3?

visually, no where near.
After playing both though, I much prefer Half Life for the pure game aspect, not the visual aspect.
Q3 is fun yes, but only multiplayer (at least I thought so). Half Life is excelent both single player and multi player. there are many mods for both multiplayer and single player available.
Single most popular multiplayer mod by far is <a href="http://counter-strike.net" target="_blank">Counter Strike</a>. The story behing it is pretty simple, terrorists(T) vs counter terrorists(CT). There are 3 different standard mission types, bomb missions where t's try to plant a bomb in one of 2 locarions on the map and the ct's either have to stop them from planting, or defuse it before it goes off. The next one is hostage, where the ct's have to rescure a group of hostages(4-6 bots) and lead them back to a rescue point. the last is assasination, there the ct's have one randomly chosen plaver be the vip and the rest of the team are body guards. they have to lead the vip to an exit point (helicopter or truck) while the t's have to try and stop them.
the most intersting aspect of the game is team play. It don't matter if you are armed with a heavy machine gun, body armor and grenades, 2-3 enemys with pistols and no armor will still be able to ambush you and turn you into a piece of leaky meat if you rush in without backup.
TFC is also very addictive, as you have 7 different character classes you can chose from. As an engineer class, you can setup sentry guns to guard locations and upgrade them with more armor and add missles. Spys can disguise themselves as enemy team members and run around unnoticed. the Demo man can plant explosives to open up new paths into enemy bases and plane remote mines on the battle field (or behind doors, very nasty).
personally, I prefer Counter strike to TFC, but they are equally enjoyable.

BTW, both run decent on my old amd 350 with 128mb and a xpert2000 32mb @800x600,which is another reason half life is still popular today.

I think the real beauty of CS, and TFC, is the simple premise, but wholly addictive, and very well thought out playing system. You run, you shoot the other guys, and you have a heck of a good time doing it.
Last time we all got together for a gaming session, we started playing at midday on the saturday, and finished sometime around 9pm the next day. :D

Dont forget to check out the millions AND MILLIONS of mods available for Quake 3 as well as Half Life.
One mod I just downloaded that has all the TFC elements but is for Quake 3 called Weapons Factory Arena.
I was recently trying Q3 Fortress but one game I was playing that p i s s e d me off I had the flag and one of my team mates killed me just so he could take the flag. And I know it wasnt for something that I did in the game. He was just as A**hole.

tazzdrummer i can destory you on TFC and anyone else that plays TFC
but that happens to me too sometimes, i get the flag and do all the work and die and somebody takes it and caps it.
also that happneed to me before my own team killed me and took my flag, so i kept killing him then he left
by the way i am TFC G0D :D
